How to nail the perfect proposal
It is often said in art, writing and even in business that what is performed should be tailored to the audience. As personal as a proposal is, we feel this advice applies here too: that is, if you are planning to propose, in most cases we'd think that you know your fiance/fiancee quite well; so what would they want? That is the most important consideration, regardless of how beautiful the ring may be or anything else.
Let's just pretend for a moment that the recipient of your gorgeous engagement ring is (and please excuse the extreme example here) - afraid of heights. In such a scenario, we would recommend avoiding proposing in a high up cable cart or helicopter, as chances are your future betrothed may be too afraid to enjoy it.
Such a momentous occasion should have some forethought, as its memory is a story that you'll think back to for years to come. We hope that our tips for proposing to your partner will help you in a practical sense.
-
Discuss marriage before proposing
We know, it's not the most spontaneous or romantic thing in the world, but prior to planning any proposal, it's important to clarify whether your partner wishes to get married. Additionally, it is also prudent to confirm timelines and ideal timelines. That way, there won't be any surprises - plus, it should hopefully make the experience less nerve-wracking if there's a higher chance of them saying yes. Getting on the same page is of utmost importance with any life-altering decisions.
-
Private proposal or public proposal?
There is a time and place for everything. For some people, the thought of a public proposal is mortifying. For others, if there's a shred of doubt, they may feel pressured to say yes in the moment and then have to break one's heart later. To avoid all of these problems, think about your partner and how they typically are before deciding.
-
Ask the bestie
If you're unsure of exact details but don't want to spoil the element of surprise, who better to ask than your partner's best friend? Who knows, maybe there's already a dream proposal in your partner's mind that has been dreamt of since childhood. Either way, it might be wise and a better idea than going in cold.
-
Arrange a photographer
It doesn't need to be an expensive affair if you're on a budget, but we do recommend that you have someone capture the proposal on camera. It can be as simple as a friend hiding in the bushes; but if you are planning something intricate, I would recommend paying for a photographer if your proposal is outside of your home.
-
Work with any restrictions in your area
At Everspark, we seriously love proposals. They are so romantic. The pandemic has put a damper on many plans, but if you just can't wait to put a ring on it - you can plan a seriously romantic proposal within restrictions. If you've been going on walks, you can choose a beautiful place that's special for you both - preferably somewhere with a view. Nature makes a beautiful backdrop for proposals.
-
Plan back-up scenarios (just in case)
In case you have to change your plans, make a few different plans, all the way down to if nothing is open or allowed, for example through a lockdown. That way, you are prepared for anything that life may throw at you (and your proposal). That said, if your partner is someone who would be particular about the proposal itself, it might be better to delay the proposal. You can also ask the bestie for advice on this.
-
Play it by ear
If something changes your plans, for example, if your partner is having a terrible day, you've just had a huge fight or just is not in a good mood, consider changing the date of your proposal to a better day. Upon first glance it might seem that proposing might improve the mood, but some might feel that the rest of the day has tarnished the proposal.
We hope that you enjoyed our guide to proposing in any circumstances. Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming engagement!
